History of Palm Coast

Back in the 1950s, Palm Coast was mostly covered in trees and swamps, with only a few farmhouses and scattered houses along the coast. People would come to Palm Coast to fish and hunt, paying for the privilege. However, in 1969, the area began to undergo development. With 48,000 home sites on approximately 42,000 acres of land, Palm Coast was on its way to becoming a thriving community.

On October 29th, 1970, Palm Coast's Welcome Center was built, marking the city's Founders Day. In 1975, Flagler County established the Palm Coast Service District, which provided essential services such as street lighting, animal control, emergency services, fire services, and fire hydrants. This was a crucial development, as it would prove invaluable in the face of future challenges.

In 1985, Palm Coast experienced its first serious Wildland Urban Interface fire, known as the Palm Coast Fire. This fire burned 131 homes and highlighted the importance of managing heavy ground vegetation near structures. Thirteen years later, in 1998, another fire struck the same area, resulting in the evacuation of the entire county and the displacement of 45,000 people. Thanks to a massive fire suppression effort involving organizations from 44 different states, only 71 homes were destroyed. While still a significant number, it was a vast improvement compared to the previous fire.

In 1999, the citizens of Palm Coast voted to incorporate, and on December 31st, 1999, the city of Palm Coast became official. By October 2000, all services had been transferred from the service district to the city, and Palm Coast developed a city council and hired its first city manager. This marked a significant milestone in the city's history, as it transitioned from a service district to a fully-fledged city.

Over the years, Palm Coast has experienced significant growth and development. The city has seen an increase in the number of homes, with more than 48,000 homes now in the area. Additionally, Palm Coast has seen the development of essential infrastructure, including paved roads, street lights, hospitals, fire stations, and parks. The city's Parks and Recreation department offers a variety of free classes and activities for residents to enjoy.
